How to Juggle Multiple Demands in 30 Days
Finding time and energy to keep working on my third novel, 400-Foot Drop, is taxing my daily writing routine. “What writing routine?” I’ve wondered lately.

Here’s what’s happening instead. I’ve been:
- Speaking in classrooms about the writing process,
- Providing feedback on 6th graders’ memoirs,
- Promoting Pigs and Flakes at Peninsula High’s Winterfest*,
- Proofreading The Uncommon AP Club, set to release in February,
- Writing my monthly blog, and
- Preparing slides for bullying prevention presentations for schools and brainstorming on venues.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have people that are partnering with me on formatting novel #2 and inviting me to speak at their schools, including collaborating with their 6th graders. Reading twenty 6th graders’ memoirs was worth every minute. I read about broken limbs, sports experiences, vacations, and an encounter with an octopus. (I got a book recommendation out of this: The Soul of an Octopus, by Sy Montgomery. Fascinating!)
Phys Ed Has Changed for Good Blog
The shriek of the whistle pierced our ears. The thud, thud, thud of our sports shoes echoed in the gym; our arms trembled from supporting our torso as our legs pumped like pistons; and our PE teacher barked out, “Two hundred more to go. Keep counting!”
Thud, thud. “One.” Thud, thud. “Two.” At least thirty five of us lined up in tidy rows of junior high girls, kept our heads down, and counted like our lives depended on it.
I hated mountain climbers and days like this made me hate PE. Read more about what PE teachers have to say…

Peninsula Thrives Continued
In my October news, since social media shows up as a theme in Pigs and Flakes, I shared statistics that were published in a letter from Peninsula Thrives. As a follow up, here’s an interesting CNN broadcast about Australia’s push to limit social media for children.
*Congratulations to Lupe, who won a copy of Pigs and Flakes. Thank you to all who signed up for this newsletter at Winterfest.
